How to Set Up a New Facebook Business Page

Establishing a Facebook Business Page gives your business an owned social presence, allowing you to connect with customers, share updates, and leverage Facebook’s tools for engagement and advertising. This document walks you through the full setup process, including current image specifications, category selection guidance, and local business check-in setup.

For the most current official instructions directly from Facebook, see the Meta Business Help page: Set up your Facebook business Page (Meta Business Help Center)

Step 1 — Log Into Your Personal Facebook Account

You must be logged into a personal Facebook account to create and manage a Business Page. Your personal profile will not be publicly visible on the business page.

Step 2: Create a New Page

  1. From your Facebook homepage, click the Menu (nine-dot grid).

  2. Select Pages.

  3. Click Create New Page.

  4. Choose Business or Brand and proceed.

Facebook will guide you through a short setup flow where you enter your business details.

Step 3: Enter Page Name, Category, and Description

Page Name
Use your official business name. This should match how your business appears on your website, Google Business Profile, and other directories whenever possible.

Category
You can select up to three categories. Your primary category is the most important, as it affects search visibility and available features.

Info
Category best-practice tip
If your business has a physical location and you want customers to be able to check in on Facebook, choose a category that represents a physical place, such as Local Business, Restaurant, Medical Clinic, or Retail Store. Pages categorized as online-only or abstract services may not support check-ins.

Description
Write a short description (up to 255 characters) that clearly explains what your business does and who it serves.

Step 4: Upload Profile and Cover Images (Current Dimensions)

Using the correct image dimensions ensures your Page looks professional on both desktop and mobile.

Profile Image
Recommended minimum size: 180 × 180 pixels
Square format
Displayed as a circle throughout Facebook, including on posts and comments

Info
Best practice: Upload a higher-resolution square image, such as 800 × 800 pixels, with your logo centered. Facebook crops the image into a circle, so avoid placing important elements near the corners.

Cover Image
Recommended size: 820 × 312 pixels on desktop
Aspect ratio: approximately 2.63:1

Info
Mobile devices crop cover images differently. Keep important text and imagery centered and avoid placing critical content near the edges. Also note that the profile image overlaps the lower-left portion of the cover image.

Step 5: Add Contact and Location Information

In the Page Info or About section, add as much information as possible, including:
• Website URL
• Phone number
• Email address
• Business hours
• Physical address, if applicable

Info
Local business tip
If you want customers to check in at your business on Facebook, you must add a physical address and ensure your Page category supports location-based Pages. Once enabled, check-ins allow visitors to tag your business location in their posts, increasing visibility and social proof.

Step 6: Add a Call-to-Action Button

Facebook allows you to add a prominent button below your cover image, such as Contact Us, Book Now, Send Message, or Shop Now. Choose the option that best aligns with your business goal.

Step 7: Customize Tabs and Sections

You can control which sections appear on your Page, such as Reviews, Services, Photos, or Events. Customizing these sections helps visitors quickly find the most relevant information about your business.

Step 8: Add Page Access for Team Members

If others will help manage your Page:

  1. Go to Settings.

  2. Select Page Access.

  3. Add users and assign appropriate roles, such as Admin or Editor.

Only assign full admin access to trusted team members.

Step 9: Publish Your First Post and Invite Followers

Before promoting your Page, publish at least one post introducing your business and what customers can expect from following you. Then invite existing contacts and customers to like or follow the Page.

Final Checklist Before Launch

Confirm the following before sharing your Page publicly:
• Page name and category are correct
• Profile and cover images meet recommended dimensions
• Contact information is complete
• Physical address is added if you want check-ins enabled
• Call-to-action button is configured
• At least one post is published
